After completing the 102 course, I would absolutely recommend this class to anyone interested in learning Japanese! The class is very fun and low-pressure, with so many opportunities to practice speaking and receive feedback between breakout rooms, Sayaka Sensei, and Yuya and Momoka Sensei. Sayaka Sensei is such an enthusiastic and thoughtful teacher! It’s amazing how quickly the 2 hours pass by each week. I visited Japan just before starting 102 and again right after finishing 102, and I was so much more comfortable using basic Japanese and navigating around. I signed up for 103 as soon as 102 ended and am excited to continue learning with Nihongo Dekita!

I’ve had so much fun studying Japanese with the Nihongo Dekita team and have made a lot of progress thanks to them. I appreciate the structure of the class. It flows in a logical way and they do a good job of not overwhelming students with too much at once. The homework assignments are just the perfect amount of work to reinforce the material while being respectful of people’s schedules. As for one piece of feedback, I think it would be great to get even more, optional assignments for those that have the time to dedicate to that. The feedback on assignments and office hours for one on one practice are invaluable to take advantage of as well.

Unfortunately, I ran out of stars to rate this course! Indeed, It’s not an easy study, because it’s designed for you to learn, and belive me, YOU WILL! However, Sayaka sensei is an amazing instructor and the TA’s Yuya sensei and Momoka sensei are as amazing too! It was a lot of study, but really fun, and by the end of the course, I felt that I was part of something greater than a normal Japanese class, but a community of excited learners supported by this amazing team. I’m sincerely greatful for the all the time, patience and attention given to me and every other student.

I’d been using free apps and YouTube for a long time, and while I was learning, there were some gaps in my understanding that never seemed to be answered by those things alone. In this course not only did I get to understand particles much better, but I also had a ton of fun! I was always looking forward to class! The teachers were friendly and gentle with their feedback, and they always answered our questions. Getting to talk in Japanese in class so much was an unexpected delight. I can’t wait for 103! 🙂

I had been learning on Duolingo and Pimsleur in preparation for my trip to Japan but knew I wanted something more in-depth and structured. This class exceeded my expectations in how much I learned in a short amount of time. There is weekly homework (writing and speaking) that really helped solidify the concepts learned in class, and the speaking was a huge help to make me feel more confident for my upcoming trip. I even signed up for the next class because I want to keep learning!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need to have taken Japanese 101 before joining?

Not necessarily. If you can read and write all the hiragana and katakana characters including voiced sounds, contracted sounds, and double consonants, you can join the Japanese 102 beginner course. If you’re a complete beginner, we recommend starting with the Japanese 101 Crash Course.

2. What if I don’t know which course is right for me?

No problem — take our placement test and we’ll review your results to recommend the best fit. You can also email us at [email protected] if you’re unsure, especially about your speaking skills.

3. What materials do I need?

All materials are provided in class so you don’t need to prepare anything.

4. Will this course focus more on speaking or grammar?

Both! You’ll learn the grammar you need to build a strong foundation for long-term learning — but the main focus is on using it in speaking. We teach grammar in context so you can use it naturally in conversation, with plenty of practice in groups, pairs, and homework.

5. What if I miss a class?

No worries! All lessons are recorded, so you can watch it to catch up as soon as you can. And you’ll have lifetime access to recordings and slides, as well. You can also book office hours if you have extra questions or want to practice speaking.

6. How many students will be in the class?

Maximum 20 students, with 2 or more teachers in each class to ensure everyone gets feedback and speaking time.

7.What is the total investment for this course?

The course is $595 USD (+ transaction fee) (valued at $1,450 USD).

A payment plan is also available at $199/month for 3 months.

Your enrollment includes 16 hours of live classes, a final 2-hour speaking session with Sayaka, 1-on-1 office hours, interactive homework with feedback, PDF resources and flashcards with audio, and lifetime access to recordings and our global community.

8. What’s your refund and deferment policy?

Refunds are available up to 14 days before the course begins. Deferment is possible until 12 days after the first class (the Week 2 Review Homework deadline) and only once per course. Please see our deferment policy for full details.
