Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do I need to have taken Japanese 201 before joining?
Not necessarily. You should have equivalent knowledge and skills — for example, completing GENKI II up to Chapter 19 or similar. If you’re unsure, you can take our placement test to see which course is right for you, or reach out to [email protected] for guidance, especially if you’re not sure about your speaking skills.
2. What if I’m between levels?
If you’re on the fence between 201 and 202, email us or take the placement test. We’ll review your results and recommend the best fit for your goals.
3. What materials do I need?
You’ll need Genki Textbook Vol. 2 (3rd edition) and Genki Workbook Vol. 2 (3rd edition). Additional materials, ANKI decks, and PDF resources will be provided in class.
4. Will this course focus more on speaking or grammar?
Both — but the main focus is speaking. You’ll learn advanced grammar and vocabulary through real-life conversation practice, cultural scenarios, and feedback, so you can use them naturally.
5. What if I miss a class?
All lessons are recorded, and you’ll have lifetime access to the recordings and slides. You can also attend office hours to review, ask questions, and practice speaking.
6. How many students will be in the class?
Maximum 20–25 students to ensure everyone can participate and get feedback during group and pair work. There will be two or three teachers in each class to make sure you get the support you need.
7. What is the total investment for this course?
The course is $985 USD (+ transaction fee) (valued at $2,380 USD).
A payment plan is also available at $197/month for 5 months.
Your enrollment includes 28 hours of live lessons, a final 2-hour speaking session with Sayaka, 1-on-1 office hours, weekly homework with personalized feedback, supplemental resources and flashcards, and lifetime access to recordings and our supportive global community.
8. Can I defer to a later course if something comes up?
Yes, deferment is possible before the Week 2 Review Homework deadline, and only once per course. Please see our deferment policy for details.
9. What’s your refund policy?
Refunds are available up to 14 days before the course starts. After that, refunds are not possible as your spot is reserved and materials are prepared.
